Biographies
- Padma Lakshmi - Emmy-nominated actress, food expert, author, and model, known for hosting the TV show Top Chef. As a child, Lakshmi dealt with illness, injuries, and bullying. She is an advocate for endometriosis awareness, women's and immigrants' rights, and HIV/AIDS.
- Bayard Rustin - Black, openly gay civil rights leader at a time when the LGBTQ+ community was denied many rights. Rustin helped organize the March on Washington and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death.
- Ona Judge - An enslaved woman who worked in President George Washington's household. She bravely escaped and lived as a fugitive in New Hampshire for the rest of her life.
- Ida B. Wells - Black American journalist and civil rights advocate. She owned a newspaper and used her research and writing skills to expose the unfair treatment of Black Americans and women. She is also known for co-founding the NAACP.
- Soledad O'Brien - An award-winning American broadcast journalist, executive producer, and author. She reported on events such as the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Hurricane Katrina. She started her own media company in 2013.
- Jean-Michel Basquiat - American painter and artist from New York City. His work combined graffiti with abstract expressionism, a style of art that shows emotion through the way the art is created. Basquiat's pieces have sold for as much as $110 million.
- Evelyn Cisneros - Mexican American prima ballerina from California. She started dancing as a child to overcome her shyness and gain confidence. Today she is a dance teacher and advocate.
- Lisa Fernandez - American fastpitch softball player and member of the Olympic Hall of Fame. She is Cuban and Puerto Rican. Fernandez could throw six different pitches over 65 miles per hour. Today she is a softball coach at UCLA.
- Kobe Bryant - One of the greatest players in NBA history. He won five NBA championships, was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, was an 18-time NBA All-Star, and helped the U.S. men's basketball team win Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. He lived in Italy from age 6-13 and became fluent in Italian.
- Michael Sam - First openly gay football player to be drafted into the NFL. As a college player, he was named All-American and Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Sam is also an author and motivational speaker.
- Duke Kahanamoku - Native Hawaiian swimmer, surfer, actor, and politician. Kahanamoku won several Olympic gold medals. He also popularized the sport of surfing. His life spanned important eras in Hawaiian history, from its time as an independent nation to when it became a U.S. state.
- Erling Haaland - Professional soccer player from Norway who is known as one of the most successful goal-scorers in the world. In the 2019 U-20 World Cup, he scored nine goals in a single match.
- Kylian Mbappé - Professional soccer player for the French national team and for Paris Saint-Germain. He became the second teenager to score two goals in a World Cup match and has scored more than 100 goals for Paris Saint-Germain.
- N'golo Kanté - Professional soccer player from France who plays for an English team and for France's national team. Although Kanté is only 5'6" and started playing at an older age than most of his peers, his skills have won him many awards and recognitions, including Premier League Player of the Season.
- Nadia Nadim - Professional soccer player who has played for Denmark, the U.S., England, and France. She and her family lived in Afghanistan under Taliban rule until they were able to escape to Denmark, where Nadim learned to play soccer. Nadim can speak nine languages.
- Emma Radacanu - British professional tennis player who made history by becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam final since 1977. Queen Elizabeth made her a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Radacanu has Romanian and Chinese ancestry and is fluent in Mandarin.
- Oscar de la Renta - A famous fashion designer whose work has been worn by celebrities around the world. Every First Lady has worn a de la Renta dress since Jackie Kennedy. De la Renta was a dual citizen of the Dominican Republic and the United States.
- Ursula Burns - American engineer and businesswoman who became the first Black American woman to lead a Fortune 500 company as CEO. She has been named a Top Woman in Tech by Forbes magazine. She also helped found a non-profit program to improve STEM education.
- Aretha Franklin - A world-renowned singer whose many accolades include 18 Grammys, 6 AMAs, and 3 NAACP Image Awards. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Franklin used her platform to raise money and awareness for diabetes, deforestation, AIDs, and other causes.
- Bruno Mars - One of the best-selling singer-songwriters of all time. He has set three Guinness World Records and won 11 Grammys. He was also named one of TIME magazine's Most Influential People in the World.
- Camila Cabello - Cuban and Mexican American singer and songwriter. Cabello is only the second Latina to have a record receive diamond certification--more than 10 million copies sold.
- Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable - Haitian-born Black trader and businessperson. He started the first non-Indigenous settlement in what is now Chicago and is known as the "Founder of Chicago." He married a Potawatomi woman and learned several Indigenous languages.
- Temple Grandin - Scientist, inventor, professor, and activist. She is a specialist in both animal welfare and autism whose designs have improved the lives of both animals and people. Grandin's work has also helped people better understand Autism Spectrum Disorder.
